Dianthus Amazon Series
If you haven't tried dianthus in
several years, you need to check out the Amazon series. They may
surprise you with their color, fragrance, heat tolerance, cold
hardiness, low maintenance, long bloom time and huge flower heads.
They remind me of carnations on steroids. The flower heads reach
4 to 7 inches across and have exceptionally sturdy stems to support
their huge bloom clusters. We carry two varieties in this series,
Amazon Neon Duo with its bi-colored clusters of deep rose and
magenta, and Amazon Rose Magic with tri-colored clusters in white,
light pink, and deep rose.
Dianthus are hardy from zones 5 through
9, which is important to me because I garden in two separate zones
and locations--here in the Sugar Land area and in East Texas.
Dianthus love full sun, well- drained garden soil, and are hardy
to 20° F. The Amazon series grow 18-24" tall and make a great
filler for any bed, or a great thriller for any container. They
mix well with pansies, flowering kale, cabbage, cardoon, violas,
snapdragons, blue lobelia, dusty miller, or alyssum.
Amazon Neon Duo was selected as the
2004 Cut Flower of the Year by the Association of Specialty Cut
Flower Growers due to the fact that the cut flowers last up to
2 weeks in a vase. Continually harvesting the flowers will promote
more blooms. Amazon Rose Magic is a Royal Horticultural Society
Award of Merit winner. Both are also great butterfly attractors
to your butterfly garden.
