The Best Organic Ingredients

Here is a key to some organic ingredients that you will find in our quality soil products.

Humate

composed of various forms of carbon, are naturally occurring material that is very rich in humified organic matter and humic substances. Humate are now recognized as the single most productive input in sustainable agriculture.

Humus

Feeds beneficial soil organisms, which enhances nutrient availability.

Greensand

Provides iron and other minerals that are necessary for plant health. Iron deficiency can result in yellowing leaves.

Sulfur

Increases acidity

Expanded Shale, Soil Mender | A

Porous, lightweight, super-heated rock that loosens and aerates poor clay soil, imparting moisture retention in sandy soils. It holds water and nutrients around your plants’ roots then slowly releases them. It does not break down once integrated, so you only have to buy it once! To apply, till or mix in one to three inches into the top six inches of soil while amending your garden beds with compost. It can also be used in large containers.

Garden Soil Builder, Soil Mender | A, B, C

All-purpose, organic soil builder for loosening clay soils and increasing retention of soil moisture and nutrients in garden beds or vegetable gardens. Elemental sulfur added to lower pH of the soil for acid-loving plants such as azaleas, camellias, gardenias, roses, and many vegetables. Natural antifungal properties; breaks down and supplies nutrients quickly; re-wets more efficiently than peat or coir; nutritious topdressing or mulch for vegetable beds, plants, trees, and shrubs.

Cattle Manure, Soil Mender | C

Quality, well-aged composted cow manure that is non-burning and odor free; a bountiful source of humus | To apply to a bed, lightly blacken soil surface with manure, then work in (double this amount for poor soils & vegetable gardens) | To apply with a cyclone spreader, open the spreader wide.

Chicken Manure, Back To Earth | C

Feed beneficial soil organisms with this fully composted chicken manure. It will aerate the soil and help keep harmful organisms and pathogens in check. The composting process occurs aerobically at nearly 160 degrees (F) which kills weed seeds and harmful pathogens. It is nearly odor-free, low in moisture content and salts.

Cotton Burrs, Back To Earth | C, A

All-purpose, organic soil builder for loosening clay soils and increasing retention of soil moisture and nutrients in garden beds or vegetable gardens. Natural anti-fungal properties; breaks down and supplies nutrients quickly; re-wets more efficiently than peat or coir; neutral pH so it does not affect the acidity nor the alkalinity of the soil; nutritious topdressing or mulch for vegetable beds, plants, trees, and shrubs.

Farm Dirt Compost, Farm Dirt | C, A

High quality compost with high microbial counts proudly made in Houston, Texas! Featured in The Houston Chronicle. Supports sustainable agricultural projects in Houston's inner city. Contains composted fruit and vegetable scraps, leaves, and wood chips. No animal products used. Increases fertility, helps loosen clay, and feeds beneficial soil microbes which help fight disease. Mix into or top-dress vegetable gardens and flowerbeds.

Leaf Mold Compost, Nature's Way | C, A

Primarily recycled leaves with a little grass and horse manure. Slowly composted over a long period into a rich humus then screened to ensure consistency and size. Increases fertility, helps loosen clay, and feeds beneficial soil microbes which help fight disease. Use to top-dress lawns to help save water and prevent brown patch and other problems. Mix into or top-dress vegetable gardens and flowerbeds for added nutrients.

Mushroom Compost, Landscapers Pride | C, A

Turkey Compost, Dr. Gobbler | C

One hundred percent properly composted organic turkey "litter." Add to vegetable gardens to promote healthy roots, water retention, and more fruit. Top-dress lawn twice per year for healthy, green turf. Top-dress or amend garden beds to stimulate microbial life for natural disease suppression and nutrient availability and uptake. Contains pine shavings and rice hulls. Antibiotic free.

Mulches

Azalea Mulch, Nature's Way | M, A

Perfect for all acid-loving plants: azaleas, camellias, gardenias, hydrangeas, magnolias, blueberries, and more. Blend of leaf mold compost, composted native mulch, and partially composted pine needles and leaves shredded to create a fibrous texture with Texas greensand—to increase the iron and nutrient content—and sulfur—to increase acidity.

Black Velvet Mulch, Landscapers Pride | M, G

This organic black mulch can be used on garden beds, walkways, play areas, running tracks, or as a general ground cover to give a well-groomed and finished appearance. Three inches of mulch over the top of garden beds improves moisture retention, regulates soil temperature, prevents erosion, and discourages weeds.

Cedar Mulch, Soil Mender | M, G

Made of shredded bark of cedar trees, this mulch is great for deterring insects. Use it as a top dress (three inches) around flowerbeds, shrubs, and trees. Reddish-brown and pleasantly fragrant when fresh. Comes in a large bag that is 150% bigger than the other mulches. Cypress Mulch, Soil Mender | M

Hardwood Mulch, Landscapers Pride | M, G

A dark brown top dress for garden beds, walkways, play areas, running track, or general ground cover. Ideal for areas subject to wind or water erosion. Not recommended for tilling into the soil. Native Double Ground Hardwood Mulch, Nature's Way | M, C, G

Made from an assortment of native trees ground up and aged for a few weeks, then reground to a finer texture. Resists washing out as the fibers tend to lock together. As microbes slowly decompose this mulch, it will break up heavy clay over time and enrich the soil. Three inches of mulch over the top of garden beds improves moisture retention, regulates soil temperature, prevents erosion, and discourages weeds.

Pine Bark Mulch, Landscapers Pride | M, A, G

Pine bark mulch is a reddish-brown color and composts to form a rich base for potting soils. It can be worked into soil to replenish organic content and amend the acidity level. Three inches of mulch over the top of garden beds improves moisture retention, regulates soil temperature, prevents erosion, and discourages weeds.

Pine Straw Bales | M, A, G

Pine needles are the best top-dress to prevent weed germination in garden beds. It provides the perfect level of acidity for your plants to absorb maximum soil nutrients. Provides a longer lasting mulch that locks together but does not compact, allowing for excellent water filtration. It is lightweight and easy to apply. One bale covers 40 square feet at 3 inches deep. It improves moisture retention, regulates soil temperature, prevents erosion, and discourages weeds.

Ground Covers

Decomposed Granite, Earth's Finest | G

Consists of small, coarse granite chunks & lots of fine materials, all from the Texas Hill Country. Compacts well to stay in place and drains quickly.

Pea Gravel, Living Earth | G

Native washed gravel often used in unpaved driveways and for pathways. Mixed brown in color with a rounded texture. The pebbles range in size from three-eighths to five-eighths of an inch. Makes for an attractive landscape accent and mulch for cacti and succulent planters. Mix into planters to improve drainage.

Play Sand, Earth's Finest | G, A

Fine-textured sand used in sand boxes, volleyball courts, et cetera. Can also be used in potting mixes or beneath pavers and flagstones.

Top Soil, Landscapers Pride | G

Great for leveling low spots and spreading beneath new sod for faster root development. | A blend of sandy loam (sand, silt, and clay) with organic composted leaves, branches, manure, straw, grass clippings, and stable bedding.

Turf Builder, Soil Mender | G, A

Ideal when planting new grass, repairing damaged or bare spots in existing lawns, or adding organic matter to older or stressed turf. This strong nutrient base mends poor soils and adds rich organic matter, including composted cotton burrs, composted cattle manure, alfalfa meal, cottonseed meal, feather meal, sulfur, and coffee bean hulls.
